The first annual TELUS PRIDE Legacy Awards is taking place this year to celebrate the individuals that built and continue to shape our community with their unabashed Pride. Vancouver Pride Society will showcase community members that promote the Legacy of Pride in Vancouver through their community service.
The eight awards each represent a colour of the rainbow flag as defined by Gilbert Baker, the artist who gave our community the rainbow flag.
Pink – Sexuality (Sexual Health+HIV/AIDS Awareness)
Red – Life (Lifetime Achievement)
Orange – Healing (Sports)
Yellow – Sunlight (Community Superstar)
Green – Environment (Safe spaces)
Turquoise – Art (Art)
Blue – Harmony (Community Leaders)

Total Eclipse of the Queer…Prom!
When: Friday, June 28, 2013 8:00pm - 12:00am
Where: Heritage Hall (3102 Main Street).Entrance by donation but no one will be turned away for lack of funds.
Come join us for an evening of big hair, shoulder pads, glitter, rainbows, and Flash-dancing! This year's theme is 80s - where Queer and Trans* youth and their allies ages 14-25 get to glam up and dance the night away! It’ll be rick rolling, karma chameleoning, breakfast clubbing, getting our feet loose and kicking off our Sunday shoes-ing good time! Catch a ride in the Delorean, and we’ll go back to the future, to see you there!
Also, a big thank you to the AMS Sexual Assault Support Centre (SASC), the presenting sponsor of this year's Queer Prom! Their enthusiasm and generosity will allow us to carry on a tradition of providing a prom experience for Queer and Trans* youth who are often excluded from the prom experience at their schools. Thank you SASC for helping us provide a safe space for Queer and Trans youth to be their fabulous selves!

The Queer Men's Book club meets at QMUNITY's Out On the Shelves Library, 1170 Bute St, 5:15-6:45pm on the third Sunday of each month for a free, fun and inclusive discussion of queer literature. QMUNITY would like to recognize Michelle Haywood-Farmer for her devotion and commitment in providing quality services for LGBT* seniors through her volunteerism with our Generations program.
Michelle began her time at QMUNITY nearly one year ago as a practicum student from the UBC School of Social Work. She has remained with QMUNITY as a volunteer because she is inspired by the projects she is tasked with: (1) a thorough review of current available data to provide a conservative estimate of the number of LGBT* seniors housed in assisted living and care facilities; and (2) an electronic resource package tailored to the needs of LGBT* seniors entering care.
After 6 months of exhaustive research, the data she has compiled suggests that the current national Canadian self-report statistic of 2% associated with "LGB" populations is inaccurate and that, in fact, the International non-weighted average of 5.79% LGBT* populations is a more reasonable conservative estimate. Her research further suggests that this average is extremely conservative when applied to metropolitan LGBT* populations highlighting the need for additional academic research and funding in major metropolitan areas like Vancouver, Montreal and Toronto. Her work is an important contribution in the discussion of how to best plan for – and to meet – the needs of LGBT* seniors as they shift from independent into assisted living. Michelle is especially passionate about ensuring that queer seniors are able to live freely and express their identities safely no matter where they are living.
Although her practicum finished a couple months back, she still devotes much of her time to the Generations program – 64 hours in May alone! She does this while co-parenting her three-year old daughter and studying full-time at UBC. If that weren’t enough, Michelle is an avid squash player who can regularly be found at the Denman Fitness courts.
