Services Volunteers
QMUNITY’s Reception Service is a key program fully staffed by volunteers. Volunteers complete a 3-hour orientation session for reception and are mentored by a veteran receptionist for two shifts. Volunteering in reception includes dealing with incoming calls and walk-ins, distributing messages to staff and other volunteers, providing information and referrals to patrons, scheduling appointments for services such as counselling and the legal clinic, and performing office support duties for staff such as faxing and photocopying. Reception volunteers also provide some peer support to those who call or walk-in if necessary, with the aim of referring the person to appropriate services.
Those interested in volunteering in Reception Services must:
- Make an initial volunteer commitment of eight months
- Commit to working at least 4 hours per week on a set shift
- Be able to complete the 3-hour reception training
- Be stable in their own lives
- Understand and maintain professional boundaries
- Be non-judgmental and supportive
- Be responsible, consistent and trustworthy
- Be committed to showing up for, and completing, all shifts
- Be willing to work as part of QMUNITY’s volunteer and staff team
