QMUNITY Gab Youth is a safe place for lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans*, two-spirit, intersex, queer, questioning (queer) youth 25 years of age and under and their allies. Gab provides information, support and referrals to queer youth as well as resources for family, friends, and professionals.
Gab also provides weekly drop-ins, leadership training, and special events such as youth dances for youth between the ages of 14 and 25 years, as well as one-to-one peer support for youth 25 years of age of under. Gab also provides PrideSpeaks which are anti-homophobia/transphobia workshops for students K – 12, colleges, universities, teachers, school nurses, counsellors, parents and youth serving agencies.
Youth participate in program development through committees, PrideSpeak leadership, filling out surveys, and through ongoing input on regular activities.
Youth Advisory Committee
The Youth Advisory Committee is a youth-driven leadership committee dedicated to creating a sense of community and a safe mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual environment by first making an impact with the operation of Gab Youth and then becoming change-makers within the broader queer community and with their allies. The committee provides direction and feedback to the staff at Gab which comes from a youth’s perspective on the issues and projects that affect queer and trans* youth and their allies.
The Youth Advisory Committee has worked throughout the last year in creating this sense of community through events such as Queer Prom, the Caffeinated cabaret night series with Out in Schools, and dances that attract youth from across British Columbia.
Volunteers are a vital part to the QMUNITY Gab Youth program and can be a very rewarding experience for people interested in working with queer/trans youth.
Gab volunteers duties include:
- Help with the set up and take down of activities
- Greeting youth, especially new youth as they come to the drop-in
- Help new youth feel welcomed
- Help out with the introductory check-in at the drop-ins
- Being available to the youth at the drop-ins for any peer support they may require
- Take the time to connect and engage youth at the drop-ins
- Help to ensure a safe space at the drop-in and being a resource person if any challenges occur
- Help at special events and youth dances
All interested volunteers are subject to a criminal record check
