Bill C-6 Voting

The Honourable George J. Furey, Q. C.

Speaker of the Senate

Senate of Canada

Ottawa, Ontario

K1A 0A4

Dear Mr Speaker of the Senate,

We write you today on behalf of QMUNITY, BC’s Queer, Trans and, Two Spirit Resource Centre, to join the growing chorus of voices urging you to recall the Senate in order to complete the important work of voting upon Bill C-6, An Act to Amend the Criminal Code (Conversion Therapy).

Commonly known as ‘conversion therapy,’ sexual orientation or gender identity change efforts have been widely discredited by medical science. These abusive and dangerous practices frequently target youth who lack the ability to consent or advocate for themselves. Conversion therapy has long-lasting, harmful consequences on self worth and self esteem.

As you know, Bill C-6 would amend the criminal code to make the worst forms of this discredited and harmful practice illegal. The bill has been sent to committee before its final vote, and because of a widely anticipated election call expected late summer or early fall, the bill risks dying on the order paper.

LGBTQ2SIA+ youth have waited long enough to have their rights respected. No one should be subjected to the torment and abuse of conversion therapy, let alone children who cannot consent to it. The senate’s failure to complete the work of voting on this bill means that youth are still vulnerable to this practice.

Mr Speaker, it is your prerogative to recall the senate if it is in the public’s interest to do so. Protecting vulnerable children from harmful abuse is in the public interest. LGBTQ2SIA+ Canadians are counting on you and your senate colleagues to stand up for the most vulnerable among us by passing Bill C-6.

Yours Sincerely,
