What is IDAHOBIT?

May 17th marks the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT) which brings people together to show their solidarity for 2SLGBTQIA+ people worldwide.
This day has been celebrated for more than 20 years in over 150 countries. IDAHOBIT calls for people to come together and recognize the on-going harm that 2SLGBTQIA+ communities experience in hopes that it will help create more advocates for change. While the name only mentions homophobia, biphobia, and transphobia, all 2SLGBTQIA+ communities are welcome to celebrate and frame the day in a way that aligns with their experiences and contexts.
Why May 17th?
May 17th marks the date when the World Health Organization decided to remove homosexuality from the classification of “Mental Disorders” in 1990. This year's IDAHOBIT revolves around the theme “At the heart of democracy” which reminds us that democracy must be grounded in making positive change for all.
