National Seniors Day
Seniors Day is celebrated annually on October 1st

What is Seniors Day?
National Seniors Day is celebrated on October 1st of every year. Enacted by the Canadian government to recognize those who came before us. Introduced only fifteen years ago, this day serves as a reminder that seniors are an integral part of society who have and continue to positively impact the world around them. To age is a privilege we often take for granted.
Why Is It Important?
Using this day to reflect on the positive contributions seniors have made in our lives and the lives of others. Whether that is through volunteering their time and skills to help the community or offering guidance to those who are younger. Life does not simply end upon retirement; it transforms into new opportunities for self-preservation and exploration.

Queer Seniors
Queer seniors are the living examples of resilience and what it means to live life as your authentic self. Seniors carry life experiences with them and show younger generations that having perseverance to overcome challenges in life is possible. Queer Aging BC serves as an example of the continuation of life experienced by seniors who also form part of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. They spotlight profiles of distinguished seniors in the queer community that are available to read on their website (https://queeragingbc.ca/) . The profiles of Joan Warner, Wilbur Turner, Jackie Haywood, and Barb Snelgrove help us visualize what successful aging can look like.
How You Can Celebrate
Use this day to take some time and celebrate the seniors around you. Give them a call, strike up a conversation, offer help with tasks, donate to programs and uplift seniors in your community. Aging is a privilege awaiting us.
