Our 2015 Volunteer of the Year is Tash M!
As if their kind heart, giving nature, and healthy sense of humour weren't enough, Tash is a literary genius that makes tireless efforts to change our world for the better. Tash can regularly be seen sitting behind the Information and Referral Services desk at the top of our main location front steps, greeting all visitors with a cheery voice and encyclopedic knowledge of resources at hand. Their impact on our mission to improve queer and trans lives is indelible.
Our staff also trust Tash with delicate tasks such as editing reports and creating valuable content, and Tash is usually called on to write the Volunteer of the Month interviews with our other volunteers!
You're suddenly transformed into a cartoon character. Who are you?
Spongebob Squarepants! We're both alike in that we're little, square, and adorable, and I think we have the exact same facial expression when we're extremely pleased with something.
What brought you to QMUNITY initially?
Well, I had just moved here, and my partner's mother mentioned it as a good place to volunteer, and eventually even drove me here! I was brought up in a family that believes that volunteering is one of the most important parts of life, and that we should be donating as much of our free time as possible.
What does QMUNITY mean to you?
It's a safe space, providing an important service.
I didn't have a place like QMUNITY growing up, and I often felt like I was the only person in my town who was queer.
Unfortunately there were no real resources for people my age. I like that QMUNITY offers a place where you can make friends, connect with others, and access resources in a safe environment.
What is your favourite thing about QMUNITY?
Meeting and helping people. Whether your task is big or small, I believe every little thing can create a valuable impact.
What is something about you that you hope never changes?
My ability to do push-ups, and my endless stream of ideas and stories.
