International Asexuality Day

April 6, International Asexuality Day, is a day to spread awareness and celebrate the asexual community, an important segment of the broader 2SLGBTQIA+ community.

Asexuality is a sexual orientation characterized by having little to no sexual attraction toward others. While some asexual people may experience no sexual attraction, others under the ace (asexual) umbrella do feel sexual attraction to varying degrees and within certain circumstances. There is a wide array of people who identify as ace, each with diverse experiences of sexuality and gender. Asexuality and aromanticism often get combined in conversation, even though asexual people can have deeply emotional and romantic relationships with others. They are two separate spectrums of identities that occasionally overlap but not always.

The asexual community often gets misrepresented and dismissed due to a lack of education and awareness of the asexual identity spectrum. While asexuality is also celebrated during Asexual Awareness Week in October, International Asexuality Day, celebrated first in 2021, provides the opportunity to be recognized globally, especially in places where there may be less awareness. Since then, organizations around the world have come together to recognize this vital part of our community.

If you are looking for a space to connect, Aces and Aros Discussion Group is a peer support group at QMUNITY that welcomes people questioning and creates a supportive community space for individuals on the asexual and aromantic spectrum.

Happy International Asexuality Day! Let’s continue to celebrate and learn about the diverse experiences of asexual people in our community.
