QMUNITY's main office is located on the land of the xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations, at 1170 Bute Street in Davie Village.

About the Role


The Staff Lawyer, Manager will manage the Legal Roadshow program that will build relationships and provide legal services throughout British Columbia for members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. This position will deliver direct legal services in employment, human rights, and/or immigration law. This is a 1.5 year contract position with possible extension depending on funding and program needs.


Core Responsibilities


Legal Service Delivery 


  • Provide legal advice, representation, and support in legal areas relevant to the 2SLGBTQIA+ community including housing, immigration, employment, family, and human rights law

  • Assist clients in drafting legal forms and documents, and preparing for court or tribunal appearances

  • Conduct legal research and prepare cases, including negotiations and settlements

  • Representing clients before various levels of court and administrative tribunals

  • Handle client intake, case management, and referrals, while maintaining strict confidentiality

  • Support clients through crisis navigation and engage in harm-reduction practices as needed

  • Provides legal and non-legal referrals to clients as needed

  • Assist with mentorship of law students, articling students, and advocates


Legal Roadshow Program Management


  • Supervise the Legal Roadshow Coordinator and support in expanding the trans ID clinic network throughout the province

  • With support from the Director of Legal Services, plan and implement legal services outside of the lower mainland


Secondary Responsibilities


Community Outreach and Advocacy 


  • Educate clients and the broader 2SLGBTQIA+ community on legal rights and processes

  • Facilitate public legal education workshops and outreach programs

  • Advocate for legal reform and systemic changes affecting the community

  • Engage with community groups and organizations to assess legal needs and inform QMUNITY’s leadership on emerging issues


Ideal Qualifications


  • Ideally candidates would have a minimum of 2 years experience in employment, human rights, and/or immigration law 

  • Experience in project or program management


Requirements:


  • Membership in good standing with the Law Society of British Columbia

  • Proven experience working with 2SLGBTQIA+ and/or marginalized communities

  • Strong research, communication, and advocacy skills

  • Ability to work independently

  • Criminal record check

  • Valid BC Driver’s License and access to a vehicle

  • Adhere to all QMUNITY policies and procedures

  • Commitment to a high standard of service and an atmosphere of respect and dignity in all aspects of the programs and services for our communities 

  • Must be available to travel throughout British Columbia
